Patrick Grant was given the boot from Celebrity MasterChef on Monday night in an hour-long show which saw him compete in three separate challenges.
The Great British Spelling Bee judge appeared alongside former model Penny Lancaster, television presenter Melanie Sykes, Britain’s Got Talent comedian Nabil Abdulrashid and reality star Megan McKenna.
In the first round, each competitor was given random ingredients to base a dish on, with Patrick being handed a bar of chocolate.
He made a chocolate pistachio and crushed biscuit fridge cake with a ginger cream.
He struggled to get the treat out of the tin but managed to impress the judges with his efforts.
Judge John Torode told him: ‘The chocolate is not too sweet because you haven’t put any extra sugar in there. The ginger’s lovely and warm and the nuts are nutty.’
Gregg Wallace added: ‘It could probably do with more biscuits to give it more crunch but I’m really impressed.
‘Ginger through the cream as well, giving it an itchy heat. I think it’s a really good combo.’
Gregg said of taking part: ‘I now understand how it feels to be a Sewing Bee contestant.
‘I obviously always try to be the nice one and luckily I think today we’ve got two nice judges.’
However, things weren’t to go so well for Patrick in the rest of the competition.
In the next round the group was tasked with making the same street food dish, Viatnamese Banh Xeo crispy pancakes with a prawn filling and a dip.
They were first tasked with guessing the ingredients, with many correctly guessing lime, chilli, mint, turmeric, basil, coriander, chicken, prawns, bean sprouts.
Most of the group struggled to get the pancake to shape properly, with Patrick attempting to cook his many times.
Gregg told the stars: ‘Nearly all of you were concerned with the pancake – and now I see why!’
Meanwhile, in the final round Patrick opted to cook a deconstructed cheesecake with whipped feta cream cheese, with the judges questioning why he would chose to change such a popular dish before he started making it.
He was up against the likes of former TOWIE star Megan who served up Champagne chicken with tender stem broccoli, carrots and new potatoes, with the judges telling her: ‘Hard to fault, well done.’
Penny dished up pan-fried fillet of sea bass, and basal pesto sweet potato chips while Nabil offered a Brazilian fish stew and tilapia mushroom sauce served with rice and smoked sausage.
It was goodbye to Patrick, with the judges telling him they were sorry to see him go but he didn’t deliver in the first episode.
Patrick said: ‘Hugely disappointed but I’ve spared somebody else the horror of having to be the first out and I feel proud of myself for that.’
Celebrity MasterChef continues on Tuesday at 9pm on BBC One.
