Iqra Ahmed (Priya Davdra) in EastEnders was horrified when she discovered Ash Panesar (Gurlaine Kaur Garcha) had kept the fact that Jags’ (Amar Adatia) shouldn’t be in prison a secret.
Since the two of them split, Ash has started a relationship with Peter (Dayle Hudson) and with help from Kim (Tameka Empson), Iqra has been enjoying spending more time with Mila (Ruhtxjiaïh Bèllènéa).
Coming up, wanting to take her business venture to the next level, Kim decides to rope Iqra into helping her with her Walford Gazette profile, and uses Iqra and Mila as a success story within the feature.
During these scenes, Mila leaves after a photographer starts taking pictures of her. Ahead of what will allow viewers to discover more about this new character, Priya Davdra explained how Iqra feels when Mila walks out of the event:
‘She doesn’t know what is going on with Mila. With Iqra she is probably thinking and questioning if it has anything to do with her and blames herself due to her past relationship.
I don’t think she knows what to think, she is shocked by Mila’s reaction because it was something she initially agreed to, so Iqra is confused and blames herself, she doesn’t know what to think.’
But a chat with Mila allows Iqra to change her perspective on things as she discovers Mila’s family homophobia. Priya explained how learning of Mila’s past allows Iqra to connect with her, given the two of them have been through similar experiences:
‘It does change her perspective, yes. Iqra has been through a similar thing, she came out only recently to her family so she definitely understands what Mila is going through and can advise her based on her experience.
They share a similar experience of coming out and their cultural backgrounds. I feel like they are similar in certain areas, and then very different – opposites attract, but Mila does bring Iqra out of her shell.’
