Kate Garraway will share the ‘raw and emotional story’ of the past year of her life as husband Derek Draper continues to battle the effects of coronavirus in her new book, The Power Of Hope.

The presenter, 53, will give readers an insight into what she and her family have been through during Derek’s ‘long fight’ against Covid-19.

Derek, also 53, was admitted to hospital in March 2020 with coronavirus, before being put into an induced coma to help his body fight the infection.

He remains in hospital almost a year later, and while he no longer has coronavirus, it has left him with damage to many of his organs including holes in his heart.

The Good Morning Britain host said of the book; ‘Whilst my experience of Covid is an extreme/extraordinary one, I am only too aware that this virus has impacted every single one of us.

‘We are all going through this, to a greater or lesser degree. By telling the story of Derek’s illness and how it has altered our lives, I hope to be able to reach out to others who are suffering.’

Kate also hopes that sharing her experience will help others, adding: ‘If writing about my experience of facing fear, coping day to day with an uncertain future and finding strength for the sake of my kids can in some way help another who is feeling lost or in despair, it will mean a lot.’

The book, which will be released in April, will chart the ‘raw and emotional story of Derek’s long fight against Covid-19 and the devastating impact it continues to have on him and on their family.’

Publishers have added that Kate will ‘write about how she is coping with the uncertainty of their future, how she has found strength in community and how she strives to hold on to hope, even at the darkest of times.’

Michelle Signore, editorial director at Transworld non-fiction added that she’s ‘inspired’ by Kate’s ‘strength and how sympathetic she is to the plights of everyone whose life is affected by the virus.

‘While having so much to contend with herself, she remains, always, so generous in spirit.

‘I am honoured to be publishing her book which, as well as telling her deeply personal story, will reach out and offer comfort and hope to anyone who is having to deal with issues such as loss, isolation, grief and separation at this most challenging of times.’

Throughout the past 10 months, Kate has kept her followers up to date with the changes in Derek’s condition and the challenges he has faced in his recovery.

Derek is still thought to be in a ‘state of minimal consciousness’ after doctors brought him round from the induced coma, and in October Kate revealed that he had said his first word, which was ‘pain’.

Kate Garraway – The Power Of Hope will be published in April.
