TikTok is home to so many weird and wonderful food trends.
Recently, we’ve seen the likes of ricotta toast (AKA the new avocado toast), lettuce tea and whipped lemonade get people talking. But the latest craze is a far more sweet affair and it’s perfect for the current heatwave.
People are making squeezy honey jelly as a refreshing summer snack.
The treat is said to be a great alternative to an ice lolly or ice cream and it’s incredibly simple to make. After all, it’s literally just frozen honey.
So what’s all the fuss about?
I decided to put the latest TikTok food trend to the test.
First up, I grabbed a plastic bottle and some squeezy honey. Then I popped some of the honey into the bottom of the bottle – enough for it to work, but not so much that it would be wasteful if the experiment did not go to plan.
Following this, I flipped the bottle upside down so the honey sunk to the lid end – a trick that ensures it comes out easily once frozen (my guess is that the more honey you use, the easier this will be).
All that was left to do was to stick it in the freezer for 4-5 hours and patiently wait.
The result?
A kind of bizarre frozen-yet-gloopy consistency – sort of like jelly, but much thicker and extremely cold.
In terms of taste, it’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect: very sweet and refreshingly cold.
However, it’s also incredibly rich – you really only need a bite or two. Even that was enough for a sweet tooth like me.
On the whole, I’d rate the frozen snack a solid 6/10 – deducting points for the added faff and stickiness. Although, perhaps if you leave it in the freezer for longer, it will turn into more of a honey slushy – which could be quite interesting.
Will I make it again? Probably not – an ice lolly seems like a more appealing, hassle-free option.
