Coronation Street has been providing fans with great viewing for a whopping 60 years, and things have changed a great deal behind the scenes in that time.

To celebrate the show’s birthday, the ITV soap has kicked off its anniversary week by sharing aerial shots of the set from 2020 and 1960.

The pictures show the show’s current home, which marks the ‘biggest single television production site in the world’. The impressive site is spread over 7.7 acres in Trafford, MediaCityUK and includes a total of six working studios.

The show has also released a picture of the show’s first ever set, and it’s remarkable to see how far Corrie has come after begging in the humble surroundings of Studio 2 at Granada Television in 1960.

The original set featured one wooden set representing the street, with stars like William Roache (Ken Barlow) having to walk on painted cobbles and step onto imaginary kerbs.

Coronation Street moved to its current canal-side home in 2014, with the Victoria Street extension completed in 2018.

Coronation is the world’s longest running soap and the makers of the show have three dramatic storylines ready to go to mark the occasion.

However, things would have been even more spectacular if the pandemic hadn’t scuppered plans for an anniversary stunt.

As Corrie boss Iain MacLeod recently told Metro.co.uk, things would have been very different if the programme didn’t have to conform to coronavirus regulations.

He said: ‘We had to change a fair amount but the fundamental essence of the stories are still what you will see. We were going to build some stuff and have a few more stunts so we had to jettison that idea.’

Coronation Street airs on ITV.
