It’s the biggest moment on the arts calendar: the annual Turnip Prize.
This is a prize to celebrate works of art that required very little effort to create.
And in a year where lockdown boredom sparked attempts at crafts and creativity, we’re not surprised to hear that this year’s awards, which started back in 1999 in protest of a Turner Prize nomination going to Tracey Emin for her unmade bed, received a record 120 submissions.
Of course, this year’s winner gives a nod to the spirit of 2020.
Titled Lockdown, the artwork is made up of a padlock on top of a pile of feathers.
Get it? Lock, like padlock, and down, like feathers. Lockdown. Clever.
The original artwork was created by Herewe Goagain, who beat other entries including A Brush with Death and Back to the Fuchsia.
Herewe, 53, a gardener from Barnstaple, Devon said: ‘It has always been an ambition of mine to express myself through crap art.
‘Once the seed was sown, the idea germinated, shoots burst forth into a luxuriate masterpiece.
‘I’m tickled pink and maybe I should lack effort more often.’
Herewe was handed her trophy – a turnip mounted on a six-inch nail – in front of the six finalists, who all cheered her big win.
Organiser Trevor Prideaux said: ‘I am delighted with the lack of effort taken to create this work.
‘This year’s event attracted a record total of 120 entries.
‘It’s fantastic that Herewe has won, she clearly has what it takes to be recognised in modern art circles and will be remembered in art history for no time at all.”
‘I believe that over the last twenty two years the artists entering The Turnip Prize have created by far better works than Alex Farquharson and The Tate Britain Gallery could ever wish to exhibit.’
Other entries included a rock on top of a tomato (called Rock On Tommy), a robin next to a paintbrush (A Brush With Death), Shut The D**k Up (a duck with Duct tape on its beak), and Back To The Fuschia – a baby doll with its back to a fuschia plant.
‘We have ordered a second skip,’ said organisers.
