Joe Biden has held Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia in the race for the US presidential election.

Biden has also held onto Maine and Illinois, with counts ongoing across the US, and polling stations in some states open as late as 1am EST.

The Democrat party won all those states in the 2016 election, when Hillary Clinton ran against Donald Trump in the presidential election.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has just been named projected winner of Oklahoma, West Virginia and Kentucky. He has also won Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina, Arkansas and Tennessee.

Joe Biden currently has 85 electoral college votes, with Donald Trump on 55. Either candidate must win 270 votes to win the presidential election.
