Normal People star Paul Mescal had a surreal moment on Sunday night as he got all dressed up for the Emmy Awards 2020.

The Irish actor, 24, was nominated for the first time ever for his role in hit series Normal People as Connell Waldron, following the show’s success earlier this year.

Paul had shared his delight at being nominated and as the big night finally approached, he shared a pre-awards snap with fans where he was seen looking suited and booted.

Digging out a dapper Louis Vuitton suit, Paul was dressed to impress as he attended the awards, albeit virtually thanks to the coronavirus pandemic.

He posted alongside his black and white picture: ‘This is nuts. I am wearing @louisvuitton on my stairs for the Emmys!’

And, being the ever gracious gent he is, Paul added: ‘Best of luck to all the nominees x.’

Paul was nominated in the category for Lead Actor in a Limited Series of Movie and faced stiff competition from the likes of Jeremy Irons, Hugh Jackman, Jeremy Pope and Marvel star Mark Ruffalo.

It was Ruffalo that landed the award on the night, thanks to his role in I Know This Much Is True, where he plays twins Dominick and Thomas Birdsey.

The actor accepted his gong via video call from his home while joined by his wife Sunny Coginey, who was seen jumping up and down as Ruffalo’s name was announced.

Clutching onto his award, Mark used his speech to urge fans watching to vote in the upcoming US presidential elections.

‘Wow, to be with these guys is such an honour, you are such beautiful performers this year and beautiful producers,’ Ruffalo said in a nod to his fellow nominees, as he began his speech.

He continued: ‘Our story is about family, it’s about a man fighting for his brother, who is living with mental illness. A story so common in the United States. How are we going to deal and take care of each other?

‘We do that with love and we do that by fighting for them. We have to come together. If you have privilege, you have to fight for those who are less fortunate. One thing I’ve learned about my family is we are stronger together.’

Addressing fans, Ruffalo said: ‘We have a strong important moment ahead of us, vote for love and compassion and kindness.’

Dan Levy, star and creator of Schitt’s Creek, was also seen encouraging those watching to vote, as he too turned his speech political while accepting the gong for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Schitt’s Creek won a huge seven Emmy Awards this year, following the show coming to an end with its sixth and final season.

Other big winners on the night included Zendaya, who became the youngest star to win an Emmy in the Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
