Coronation Street is set to throw in another huge curveball to the much talked about Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) as his demonic storyline is unexpectedly merged with Daniel Osbourne’s (Rob Mallard) complex friendship with sex worker Nicky Wheatley (Kimberly Hart-Simpson).
We know that Geoff visited escorts while he was abusing his wife Yasmeen (Shelley King) – will it turn out that he has slept with Nicky – or that he will try to in the future, incurring Daniel’s wrath?
Teasing the major storyline ahead, show boss Iain MacLeod revealed: ‘We have more for Daniel – we have seen his slightly messed up friendship with Nicky.
‘That will go on for some time but not the way you are expecting. It draws in Geoff at a certain point which becomes significant for Yasmeen’s trial in a huge way – that’s going to be really big.’
Shelley King was recently back on set, presumably in the run up to the big trial – so will Nicky and Daniel play a big part in Geoff’s undoing and Yasmeen’s eventual liberation?
It’s a saga that has captured the attention of fans all year – and Iain is glad to move back to six episodes so that the pace can be picked up again as there are more big Geoff and Yasmeen turning points to come.
He added: ‘I think people were gagging for it – I know I was. 3 eps a week has been brilliant but when it’s chopped in half its frustrating. We were in the midst of Geoff and Yasmeen, we still are, and people were desperate for the next instalment.
‘Coronation Street has become a bastion of normality for people at home in lockdown – having characters they recognise every night was comforting. Everyone is enduring this, it’s important to give them their full complement of Corrie as soon as we can.
‘People have been getting in touch to thank us for transforming them out of lockdown and a moment of escapism.
‘Anecdotally it seems to have been very important to people – if you look at the numbers watching, the lockdown counted for an uptick for most shows but people really returned to Corrie when there was uncertainty in the world.’
