The Weeknd used his acceptance speeches at the MTV Video Music Awards to highlight the death of Breonna Taylor and the shooting of Jacob Blake.

The singer confessed he struggled to be happy about his wins given what was going on in the world.

Winning best R&B for Blinding Lights, he kept his speech short and to the point: ‘Thank you, VMAs and MTV. I want to thank Lamar Taylor and Anton Tammi for the video

‘It’s hard for me to celebrate right now and enjoy this moment. So I’m just going to say justice for Jacob Blake and justice for Breonna Taylor. Thank you.’

He gave a very similar message when he collected another award towards the end of the night.

Breonna Taylor, 26, was shot dead in her home in March by police who were carrying out a no-knock search warrant.

Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence and Lili Reinhart are some of the celebrities who have been calling for action in her case.

Meanwhile Blake, 29, was shot eight times in the back during an incident with the police, with his three sons in the car at the time of the shooting.

One bullet went through his spinal cord leaving Blake paralysed from the waist down.

The Weeknd, real name Abel Tesfaye, won trophies for video of the year and best R&B at the VMAs, which took place in New York without a live audience.
