Debra Messing believes she was ‘too thin’ when starring as Grace Adler in the America sitcom Will & Grace.

The actress first appeared as the character in 1998 and returned to the show for its reboot in 2017.

However, when chatting with Jameela Jamil on her podcast I Weigh, the 51-year-old opened up about her past weight battle.

‘When I started Will & Grace I was a size eight and what happened was, every time I would go in for a fitting, I couldn’t fit into clothes,’ she told the host.

The star added: ‘80% of it I couldn’t fit into and I would just leave hating my body and hating myself. I loved my costume designer, she would always say, “Don’t worry,” and she would talk to her assistant and say, “Okay, can you call over and get a larger size?”

‘And that was sort of the thing that was always on repeat all the time.’

Debra explained how this led her to believe that her job would be ‘easier’ if she ‘just lost weight’.

‘So I started doing yoga every single day and I did one of those meal delivery services,’ the mum-of-one pressed. ‘I started to get smaller and then I was a six, and they were like, “You’re losing weight, you look amazing”.’

However, the reaction didn’t sit right with her, as she added: ‘I mourn the fact that that was my interpretation of reality and that was the torture that I put myself through.

‘I was way too skinny… But, you know, going in for those fittings, I fit into everything. And all of a sudden, I literally could fit into anything that was high fashion.

‘So all of a sudden, everything seemed to open up for me, because I was a two.’

Debra returned to the iconic series in 2017 for the show’s reboot, which came to a head this year following three successful seasons.

Eric McCormack, who plays Will Truman, took to social media following the programme’s wrap, and wrote: ‘Well, we’re taking this one out like we brought it in: with love, laughs, gratitude… and on our own terms.

‘Season three of #WillandGrace (well, season 11!) will be our grand finale… and it’s gonna be FANTASTIC.’

Will & Grace is available to stream on Netflix.
