Officials have described the blast as the most powerful explosion to hit Beirut in years, and the death toll is expected to keep on rising.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Hassan Diab has blamed the explosion on 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate left in a warehouse for six years.

He vowed to punish those responsible for the explosives, stating that it was ‘unacceptable’ that they had been stored unchecked for so long.

‘I will not rest until we find the person responsible for what happened so we can hold them to account and impose the most severe punishment,’ he told reporters.

‘It is unacceptable that a shipment of 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate has been present for six years in a warehouse, without taking preventive measures and endangering the safety of citizens.’
