Andrew Lloyd Webber has signed up to take part in a new coronavirus trial with the hope of speeding up the reopening of theatres.

The University of Oxford has teamed up with drug company AstraZeneca and are currently working on the new vaccine ChAdOx1 nCoV-19.

And the theatre legend proudly took to social media to announce he’d be joining the study this week.

Writing to his 209,000 followers, the 72-year-old confirmed: ‘I am excited that tomorrow I am going to be vaccinated for the Oxford Covid 19 trial.

‘I’ll do anything to prove that theatres can re-open safely.’

Right on cue, fans applauded the star for his act of bravery in the fight against Covid-19.

‘You Sir are giving us the help and hope we so need, thank you from the bottom of my heart,’ one wrote while another said: ‘I really admire how you actually act in order to support what you believe. Most of the people only talk much but do little. Keep my fingers crossed that the vaccine works. Stay safe.’

Someone else felt the same, adding: ‘I have admired your work since the concept album for JCS, but now I admire your courageous fighting spirit.

‘Thank you for your willingness to move into this new battle against the virus. I applaud you. I hope this vaccine is the success we need.’

Andrew recently voiced his views on the closure of theatres when talking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.

Here, the composer said: ‘[It’s been] absolutely awful to see everything that I’ve loved in my life gone. I want to prove that they can be open.

‘What I hope to do is to be able to demonstrate to the Government what has happened in Korea, at The London Palladium, hopefully in the first week of July…’

He added: ‘We’re going to do a whole series of tests there to see whether or not it’s going to work.

‘I really believe that we in theatre must be positive and use everything we can to demonstrate we can open. If having done that we fail, at least we’ve tried.’
