Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid have praised Ian Wright as their ‘hero’ for his positivity in the face of racism while discussing the Black Lives Matter movement.
The former footy ace has been calling out the racist abuse he has been receiving online from followers, with direct messages hurling targeted attacks at him in the midst of Black Lives Matter.
After slamming Dominic Raab for being out of touch over ‘taking the knee’ – stating this week that he thought it was from Game Of Thrones, and not connected to a sign of respect – the pair turned their attention to the footballer and his work to raise awareness in the UK.
Susanna said: ‘One of the people, particularly a hero of Piers and mine, Ian Wright, spoke out very powerfully on his own experience of racism it’s pretty shocking.’
‘I like the positivity that Ian Wright’s come up with, he’s been subjected to the most horrendous racism,’ Piers later added. ‘He’s been revealing in some of these posts, showing what people have been sending him privately, obviously because they’re cowards.
‘The disgusting racism that Ian Wright, who’s a great guy, he was a great footballer, he’s a great bloke. He’s one of the nicest people you’ll meet.’
‘The level of abuse he is getting is utterly disgusting,’ Piers added. ‘If you know people that are like this, we’ve got to work together to root it out.
‘We talk about this, don’t we, when we talk about Islamist terror attacks, you got to root it out of their society, we have to root out racists collectively in this country.’
Their praise came after Ian Wright stated in a clip that, in light of the work of footballer Marcus Rashford – whose work was fundamental in a government u-turn in supplying free school meals across the summer.
‘What these people are willing and capable of doing, I feel like I say as a black man, a 56-year-old black man who has been, as I say, racially abused even recently, very optimistic about what’s going on in the future,’ he said.
‘That is why I cannot stress enough how much it is, how important it is, for the momentum to not be lost. And this is why I say the policies have to change to things have to change, so that people know that’s not just another t-shirt campaign.’
‘The Black Lives Matter is not just another campaign that’s going to last a couple of months,’ Wright asserted.
‘This is going to go on, because people genuinely want real change.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
