Justice League star Ray Fisher has announced he no longer supports director Joss Whedon’s work on the blockbuster leaving fans confused over the sudden change of heart.
The 32-year-old actor, who plays Cyborg in the DC Comics movie, previously declared his support for Whedon when he took over directing duties from Zack Snyder who had to leave the project due to personal reasons.
On Monday, Ray shared a throwback clip from his appearance at the Warner Bros. Comic-Con panel back in 2017 when he said: ‘Joss is a great guy and Zack picked a great person to come clean up and finish up for him.’
Fast forward to 2020 and it seems Ray feels a whole lot different about the replacement choice now as he captioned the clip: ‘I’d like to take a moment to forcefully retract every bit of this statement.’
He didn’t offer any further explanation but his Twitter bio reads: ‘#ReleaseTheSynderCut,’ suggesting he prefers the original director’s work on the movie after all.
Some of Ray’s followers agreed with his new sentiments with one replying: ‘Joss ruined the movie. Glad this is settled.’
Understanding the actor’s position three years ago, another weighed in: ‘Nothing against that at all man, you had to play the game, this was your first big role, you couldn’t stand against the suits. Time. Positivity. Revealed the truth.’
But others defended Whedon and seemed in agreement that he was in a tricky spot taking over Snyder who had already begun work on Justice League.
‘Why take a moment to “forcefully retract” a statement where you said someone was a “great guy?” Isn’t that kinda mean spirited? We don’t know the details of the work environment but that’s a little uncool. He’s said nothing negative about any cast & crew, and was just doing a job,’ one said in support of Whedon.
Another said: ‘Way to be an asshole and throw Joss Whedon under the buss for trying to make the best of a bad situation. He had to do what the studio told him to do, that was the nature of WB and DC hiring him.’
‘This seems quite petty of a thing to say tbh, when the real culprits are within WB themselves. It’s unfair to blame Whedon when it’s technically not even his film,’ one weighed in.
Calls for the Snyder cut have mounted over the years and in May, the director confirmed his extended version will arrive on HBO Max in 2021.
