All directors have their own way of doing things, but Anne Hathaway has revealed Christopher Nolan has a very specific quirk, with the filmmaker not permitting any chairs on his set.
The Princess Diaries star heaped praise on the Dark Knight director, explaining that his unexpected rule seems to have worked wonders.
Mentioning other directors who ban mobile phones from set, Anne added: ‘Chris also doesn’t allow chairs.
‘I worked with him twice. He doesn’t allow chairs, and his reasoning is, if you have chairs, people will sit, and if they’re sitting, they’re not working.’
She added to Hugh Jackman in Variety’s Actors on Actors series: ‘It always arrives at the end under schedule and under budget. I think he’s onto something with the chair thing.’
Anne had high praise for the director, explaining that his approach to filmmaking is ‘so minimal’ but always results in ‘huge and ornate’ movies.
The bizarre revelation has led to fans running away with the idea on Twitter, with one writing: ‘So Christopher Nolan hates when people sit, so now we know why he had Batman beat the s**t out of Joker in the interrogation scene.’
Sharing a photo of Robert Pattinson sitting in an open van door on set, another wrote: ‘Robert Pattinson did this specifically to annoy Christopher Nolan,’ while one more shared a picture of some colourful chairs, writing: ‘Rt to scare christopher nolan.’
Others have pointed out the rule doesn’t seem accessible for cast and crew who aren’t able-bodied, with one writing: ‘Christopher Nolan not having chairs on set because “if they’re sitting they aren’t working” isn’t a cute anecdote. So, this set is just meant for able-bodied people then? Yikes.’
Metro.co.uk has contacted reps for Christopher Nolan for comment.
The filmmaker is well known for his big-scale productions, with upcoming movie Tenet filming in seven countries around the world with a huge crew.
Previously opening up to Metro.co.uk about Christopher’s approach to stunts, Christian Bale’s stunt double on The Dark Knight revealed he wanted everything done for real.
‘I have to tip my hat to Chris Nolan. He really loves to do things for real,’ stunt performer Buster Reeves explained. ‘All the stuff that nowadays would be pushed to CGI, like all the Marvel movies and stuff like that, we got to do for real.
‘When you see Batman – or should I say when you see me – going through Gotham City, being pulled underneath the trains, smashing through bridges, we did that for real.’
