Talking ‘bout Bugsnax
So, GC, do you think early adopters will have a killer app to go home with on day one of PlayStation 5? Looking at the PlayStation 4 it was, um… oh look! Over there! Jim Ryan is riding a horse naked through Times Square!
Uh, yeah – not inspiring. I thought at least Mortal Kombat X came out on the launch day of the PlayStation 4. Or Street Fighter 5. But, I guess they came a little later. [Mortal Kombat X was over a year later, Street Fighter 5 was over two years after – GC]
I know that not every console can open with Super Mario 64 or Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild – but could the PlayStation 5 get something interesting on day one? Horizon Forbidden West? That game with the cat? Stray? Dinosaur High?
Hey, did you know that the Dreamcast came out with SoulCalibur on its first day over here? Wow. I always thought it was a few weeks later, but that was one hell of a killer app, hey? [SoulCalibur came out in December 1999, the Dreamcast came out in October in Europe – GC]

GC: The only games in the reveal with confirmed 2020 release dates are Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Astro Bot’s Playroom, Godfall, Deathloop, Kena: Bridge Of Spirits, Jett: The Far Shore, and Bugsnax. So clearly Bugsnax is the killer app.
License revoked
Glad to hear we’re getting some Batman announcements by at least August but I hope there’s a WB Games dedicated event before that because I was really looking forward to Harry Potter as well. That company is so weird with all the delays and cancellations, but also because almost all their games are good. I even liked Mad Max for what it was.
Every time something like this comes up I can’t help but think of the people saying that the next gen will see even fewer games coming out from each company. For me the worst victim of that is Rocksteady. Not only has it been five years since their last game but they really seemed like they were making a name for themselves as a top tier developer.
But rather than go onto bigger and better things they’re now rumoured to be doing some kind of Batman game or Suicide Squad or something. I like DC but Rocksteady are too good to be doing any licensed work, they should be making their own original games, but at this rate their all be retired before they get their chance.
Secrekey
PlayStation not now
Just tried a seven-day trial of PlayStation Now on PC.
Just wondering if anybody else’s experience is better than mine, because so far it’s been about as much fun as pulling my own teeth out.
Take out the trial and it doesn’t show in subscriptions so I’m going to have fun stopping the subscription (hopefully there is just a delay in it showing but still… aaarrgh).
Despite signing into the app, it took ages before the PlayStation Now app accepted I had a subscription and kept sending me to the website (which you have to sign into multiple times when you go to check different items on your account).
Captcha comes up whenever trying to sign back into the app which doesn’t appear to remember your details.
Finally got it working and then the picture just flickers different colours continually when trying to play anything (150mb/s internet so that isn’t an issue).
Surely a product from a fairly slick company like Sony can’t be this messed up can it?
I am genuinely curious – is anybody else using it and thinks it’s a good service?

Common sense
Interesting read with Matt McLaurin stating – and subsequently deleting – that the PlayStation 4 has more life in it, seemingly after the PlayStation 5 is released. It does seem to contradict what Sony where saying about PlayStation 5 games not appearing on PlayStation 4, no doubt as a way to get you to buy the new console.
The only thing I can think of is maybe first party games being exclusive, and multiformat games supporting older hardware in its last couple of years. That said, it would be unfair on people buying or having bought a PlayStation 4 recently to play The Last Of Us Part 2 or the upcoming Ghost Of Tsushima.
On a side note, being stuck indoors must be affecting the top brass at EA as they seem to be applying a bit of common sense. Not only does Star Wars Squadrons look amazing, it’s priced quite reasonably and the apparent removal of all things lootboxes is great news. Maybe Jedi Fallen Order’s massive sales as a single-player game without said looting has them rethinking their strategy.

Dumb name
Having read a bit more about the Xbox Smart Delivery thing for the Xbox Series X I’ve got to applaud Microsoft for such a consumer-friendly approach (which on top of Game Pass is pretty epic). For those that don’t already know, the way I understand it you can purchase an Xbox One game and when the same game is released on the Xbox Series X you get the Xbox Series X version upgraded for free – basically no more having to re-buy games (Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and Tomb Raider spring to mind when I upgraded from the previous to current generation) – saves even carry over.
Let’s hope third party publishers also follow suit (Ubisoft confirmed it for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla but based on releasing GTA 5 on PlayStation 5 I guess Rockstar won’t do it).
Parsonas
GC: It seems a very welcome feature. We still don’t understand the name though.
Realism is relative
There have been several letters since the PlayStation 5 games reveal video mentioning that the graphics don’t look much better than current gen games, but many games this generation – Red Dead Redemption 2, NBA 2K20, and Forza Horizon 4 to name a few – look virtually photorealistic already? Which surely means that there is only a very small improvement that could possibly be made anyway? Just a thought.

PS: I dug out the Dreamcast to have a blast on Sega Rally 2 the other day. I’d forgotten how completely rubbish the Dreamcast control pad was.
GC: Every generation seems photorealistic until you see the next one, or at least that’s how it usually works. Then end goal of photorealism is to be indistinguishable from reality. The Last Of Us Part 2 is good, but it’s not that good.
Bigger and better?
Going by the size comparisons, the PlayStation 5 is the largest mainstream console ever released. It’s definitely a big boy!
I wouldn’t mind the design if it wasn’t so big. I don’t think the design will age well and will look unwieldy under our TVs in a few years, not as futuristic and stylish as it did in the release footage.
What are your thoughts on the console design GC?
Gemma
GC: We’re just glad it’s not another boring black box, although we’d say we the controller was significantly more attractive than the actual console.

Road to release
We are slowly approaching the next generation. Exciting times for everyone but what’s more exciting is Naughty Dog’s sequel to one of the best video games ever, which is The Last Of Us.
We are only a few days away from when consumers will get their hands on the game, on 19 June. The game has already gotten several 10/10s from video game critics with a whopping 96 rating on Metacritic. From the looks of it Sony has yet another home run from one of its beloved studio.
On its road to release the game faced several roadblocks like delays, leaks, and of course the global pandemic up on its head. The game still managed to overcome all of these and kept us intrigued with trailers and gameplay footage. It is now one of the most pre-ordered PlayStation games in several countries. Naughty Dog is surely breathing a sigh of relief after all this.
This Sony published PlayStation studio has set such high standards that it looks somewhat impossible for others to surpass. Every time they release a game it’s always better than the last one. Setting such high bars in storytelling, graphical fidelity, and character interaction which is unseen in this industry. The experiences they provide are unparalleled.
The minds behind the studio are continuously making some of industry’s best titles. In the mid-to-late 90s, Naughty Dog was best known for Crash Bandicoot. They were known to make Mascot Platformers like Jak and Daxter has now evolved into some of the gaming’s storytelling extravaganza. With the Uncharted games and of course The Last of us they have become arguably the best videogame studio in history. Gamers today know Naughty Dog like series binge watchers know Netflix and HBO.
It will be interesting to see what’s next for them. The minds that are able to push the PS4 hardware to its fullest and create masterpieces it makes gamers excited what they can do with the PS5 (likely releases Holiday 2020)

GC: Uncharted 3 wasn’t better than 2.

In regards to Two Macks’ letter, you can use an external drive to store and play original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games but have to play Xbox Series X games off the console’s hard drive. They have announced Seagate expansion cards, but I imagine these will be very expensive.

I’d be interested to get your/readers take on Huntdown. Do you have any plans to review?

GC: No, we did have a brief go, and it seemed quite good, but we didn’t have time for a full review.
This week’s Hot Topic
The question for this weekend’s Inbox is inspired by last week’s PlayStation 5 reveal and asks whether you now intend to buy Sony’s new console?
What did you think of the reveal and did it change your mind, one way or the other, about the PlayStation 5? What did you think of the games and which impressed you the most? What else would you have liked to have seen and what did you think of the console design?
As similar conversations will probably be going on in the weekday Inbox, please make sure to label your emails for the Hot Topic or the normal Inbox.
