Coronation Street actress Sue Devaney has revealed that chaos will reign when Debbie Webster joins forces with Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) at the bistro – as they unite over a disastrous fish order.

Glad that Corrie isn’t going to go down the obvious route of making Debbie and Leanne hate one another, Sue enthused to Metro.co.uk that she is loving the Leanne and Debbie dynamic.

She grinned: ‘It’s so nice to work with Jane; there are so many regulars so when you get your scripts, you get to work with so many different people. It’s brilliant. Leanne is very strong so I love them together.

‘We have such a laugh; we have this bit with the wrong order of the fish when Debbie thinks she’s got cod and she’s got pollock. We talked about fish all day and I think she says something like: “Do I look like a woman who accepts a load of pollocks!?”‘

When Debbie first returned to the Street, she was up to no good – but now that she has done the right thing and is settling in, the star is relishing playing the comedy.

She said: ‘Definitely. I think when they sent me the first scripts where Debbie wanted to knock down Coronation Street, I think she thought as a businesswoman that she was in the right.

‘Nobody is bad through and through, you behave badly. Debbie behaves badly because of what she has been lacking growing up. She’s from working class roots and she has had no children and is single so business is her life and she is desperate to achieve. It’s like anything in life isn’t? Wear it like a loose scarf, all will be well.

‘To see the humour in things is important; even when someone is downright rude, you can do it in a comical way. I can see the funny side and don’t take it too seriously. I remembered when my mum was dying; me and my sister still belly laughed.

‘Even in tragedy, there is comedy, isn’t there? There’s joy to be found in the darkest of places. Northerners do that so well, they tend not to take things too seriously.’

And she has no plans to quit the Street either, as she is having so much fun playing the sharp character.

She smiled: ‘Oh I love it, absolutely love it. She’s so glamorous and says exactly what she’s thinking. I’m a bit of a tomboy so it’s quite liberating. I am a people pleaser and don’t like to offend so playing Debbie is a bit “oh yes I am like this”. I have kept it all in all these years and can release it through Debbie!’

But who could Debbie become true friends with, a daunting task for someone willing to become accustomed to her complex nature.

Sue mused: ‘Ohhh, it was great fun to do all the wedding dress stuff. It was just after Ray with Debbie lying. She took over Abi’s wedding dresses. It was such fun working with Sally Carman, Sally Dynevor and Kate Ford is brilliant.

‘It was nice for them to be together and have a laugh. I think Debbie, she really struggles to let anyone in. She has been hurt so much, she just doesn’t trust. She adores Abi, she sees herself in Abi. If she were to let anyone in, it would be Abi.’
