Ole Gunnar Solskjaer aimed a thinly veiled dig at Premier League rivals Manchester City and Chelsea when responding to criticism from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp had questioned how United were able to spend more than £100million in the summer transfer window, saying “I don’t know how they do it”.
The Liverpool manager said he could understand Chelsea and Man City spending big in the market due to their super-rich owners but expressed his surprise at United being able to splash out on £73m Jadon Sancho and £34m Raphael Varane.
But Solskjaer is adamant that United spend within their means and jokingly admitted that he had bought an electric car to help avoid funding the petrol and gas-fuelled spending of Man City and Chelsea.
‘We are a well run club,’ said Solskjaer ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Southampton. ‘We do have a lot of fans out there and we do have good sponsorship deals.
‘How we get the money, as a manager you want more and more. I have heard ‘no’ a few times.
‘How other clubs run their clubs, there are different models at different clubs. I have started buying electric cars! That is all I want to say about that situation.’
Meanwhile, Solskjaer is confident Paul Pogba will still be at the club at the end of the summer transfer window.
‘Yes I expect him to be here when September 1 comes,’ added Solskjaer.
‘Of course, I’m very happy with the squad, the signings we’ve made.
‘Paul, he’s enjoying his football and I’ve said many times, my job is to make sure we’re getting the best out of Paul and Bruno (Fernandes) and all the individuals – all the very good players we’ve got – within a team structure.
‘For me, to make players stay at Man United, when you see a good squad and get good results that helps and we want to win things.’
