Danny Murphy has tipped Liverpool to make ‘one big signing’ before the summer transfer window shuts.
The Reds have endured a subdued transfer window, signing defender Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig earlier in the summer but failing to bolster Jurgen Klopp’s squad any further.
While Liverpool have been fairly inactive, their Premier League rivals have splashed the cash, with Manchester City breaking the British transfer record on £100m signing Jack Grealish and Manchester United spending more than £100m on Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are on the brink of completing a club-record £97.5m deal for Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku.
The summer transfer window closes on August 31 but Murphy reckons his former club may still make ‘one big signing’ in the next few weeks.
He told talkSPORT: ‘There is still a chance Liverpool will make one big one. I think so. An attacking one. In the attacking third.
‘I personally wouldn’t sign anybody if I was Jurgen Klopp unless I thought they could go into the XI.
‘If you can get one that can play instead of Firmino or instead of Mane then sign him. But there aren’t many about.’
Klopp insisted he was ‘very happy’ with his Liverpool squad earlier in the month and would be content even if the club failed to sign any more players this summer.
‘I’m very happy with the squad,’ he said. ‘That doesn’t mean we don’t look at the market.
‘But as long as nothing happens, I’m more than happy with the squad I have, more than happy with the players I have.
‘We have so many things which you can’t sign: you cannot sign pressing, you cannot sign counter-pressing, you cannot sign atmosphere, you cannot sign togetherness, you can’t sign the atmosphere we can create in the stadium, you can’t sign Anfield, you can’t sign our anthem, you can’t sign a lot of things.
‘And that’s what we have to use obviously. There are different approaches obviously out there and we have no influence on that. Our situation is like it is.
‘We have a big squad and there might still something happen until the end of the transfer window but I can’t say anything about that in the moment.’
