Marvel is kicking off its new phase in earnest with the arrival of the final trailer for The Eternals as Angelina Jolie leads a team of superpowered beings.
We are introduced to the titular group and given more background on an event called The Emergence, which was kickstarted after Thanos’ snap was reversed in Avengers: Endgame.
The Emergence is clearly a big no-no, as we see Richard Madden’s character Ikaris ask Salma Hayek’s Ajak: ‘How long do we have?
‘Seven days,’ she replies.
Ikaris, and Sersi (Gemma Chan) set about getting the band back together as she explains to a confused human Dane (Kit Harington): ‘We came here 7000 years ago to protect humans from the Deviants.
‘We were instructed not to interfere in any human conflicts unless Deviants were involved.’
Deviants are hideous looking creatures intent on destroying anything in their path, but luckily the Eternals are a bunch of good looking creatures who can fight back.
We are introduced to Angelina Jolie’s badass Thena who can make weapons materialise out of thin air, and Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo who has a few nifty tricks up his sleeve himself.
‘When you love something you protect it,’ Thena declares as she’s brought face to face with a Deviant who replies: ‘You can’t protect any of them.’
Oh, it’s about to go down.
The final trailer is of course the most epic of the teasers released so far giving a good look at the impressive set pieces, costumes and camaraderie between these new characters that are making their debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Madden seems like he will be a watchable leading man, no easy feat in a blockbuster of this scale, with Chan bringing her empathetic touch from Humans to keep things grounded.
How they fit in to the rest of the MCU will be interesting to see, especially as these all-powerful beings have been ordered to take a ‘hands off’ approach.
The Eternals is out November 5.
