World no1 Ashleigh Barty has suffered a stunning first round exit at the Tokyo Olympics.
The Australian, fresh from a second grand slam title at Wimbledon in July, fell to Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain in the women’s singles event in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Spaniard secured a 6-4 6-3 win over her frustrated opponent, who put in an error-strewn performance that included 55 unforced errors.
Barty still has a chance of winning a medal this summer in doubles action alongside Storm Sanders.
The pair booked their place in the second round of the event on the first day of action.
Her elimination means Japan’s Naomi Osaka is the highest-ranked player remaining in the singles draw.
The 23-year-old, who lit the Olympic flame in the opening ceremony on Friday, began her camoaign against Saisai Zheng of China on Sunday with a 6-1 6-4 win.
Elsewhere in women’s singles action, Karolina Pliskova, who lost to Barty in the Wimbledon final last month, advanced to the second round with a 6-1 6-3 win over Alize Cornet.
