Andy Murray has withdrawn from the men’s singles event Tokyo Olympics with a thigh injury.
The two-time defending champion was due to face Felix Auger-Aliassime on day two of singles action.
But the Scot has withdrawn from the event on medical advice.
Murray began his doubles campaign alongside Joe Salisbury on Saturday.
After discussions with doctors, the 34-year-old was advised to compete in only one event, choosing doubles.
‘I am really disappointed at having to withdraw but the medical staff have advised me against playing in both events, so I have made the difficult decision to withdraw from the singles and focus on playing doubles with Joe [Salisbury],’ Murray said.
Murray, who won gold in the singles event in London 2012 and Rio 2016, is replaced in the singles event by Australia’s Max Purcell.
Choosing to continue with his singles campaign would have also seen Salisbury’s tournament come to an end.
The two defeated defeated second seeds Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut to reach the second round on Saturday.
