Matteo Guendouzi has insisted that he is passionately behind the Arsenal cause, while also knowing that his long-term future could lie elsewhere as he prepares to leave the club on loan again, this time to Marseille.
The 22-year-old burst onto the scene at Arsenal when he signed from Lorient in 2018, but fell out of favour as quickly as he rose to prominence.
The Frenchman spent last season out on loan at Hertha Berlin, where he made 24 appearances before suffering a metatarsal fracture which ended his season.
Although his time in Germany has finished, Guendouzi is not returning to Arsenal, instead he is set to return to his native France and play for Marseille next season on loan.
While his immediate future is elsewhere, the midfielder has not ruled out staying at the Emirates long-term, although it doesn’t seem likely.
‘I want to meet the greatest champions as teammates and opponents, live my dreams, work hard to meet my expectations,’ Guendouzi told BILD.
‘I’m under contract with Arsenal and we have mutual obligations. There is interest from clubs from different leagues. Right now I’m one hundred percent focused on my recovery. In due time, I will decide with my advisors and my father which direction we are headed.’
Guendouzi has said that watching Arsenal’s disappointing season from afar last season was hard as the Gunners finished eighth in the Premier League.
He wants to see the team return to former glories and will be supporting them whether he still plays for them or not.
‘Arsenal must return to where it belongs,’ he said. ‘I don’t know the reasons for the failure because I wasn’t there last season. But I’m concerned about the club’s situation because Arsenal deserve great things.
‘I am a Gunner from the bottom of my heart and will remain so, no matter what.’
