Jamie Murray has told his brother Andy to draw energy from the crowds as he looks to resurrect his tennis career.
Andy Murray, the younger Murray brother, was well beaten by Denis Shapovalov in the third round of Wimbledon in what was his first appearance at the All England Club in four years.
Given Murray’s lack of match play, there was no shame in a third-round loss although he was left frustrated by the manner of his straight sets exit.
Jamie, who lost in the men’s doubles second round with partner Bruno Soares, had some feedback for his brother during the tournament and has advised him to engage more with the crowd as he looks to prolong his career.
‘Once he started to display a lot more positive energy on the court and gave the crowd something to get behind and he started to engage with them more, he start to play a lot better,’ said Jamie, referring to Andy’s win over German qualifier Oscar Otte.
‘I think he needs to use that today and in future matches, because at the end of the day all the people that are coming here to watch have been locked up for 18 months.
‘They haven’t been able to do anything and they want to come support him and shout for him. So engage with them and give them something to get fired up for.
‘He did that in the fourth and fifth sets once the roof closed and it’s obvious that he played better after that.’
Jamie remains in awe of his younger brother and revealed his hatred of losing has driven him on to become a three-time Grand Slam champion.
‘He was always very competitive – I think we both were,’ added Jamie. ‘He’s more fiery than I am. Maybe I was a bit more calm or placid about things. He never liked to lose.
‘The older he got, the more that developed into the player that he became today and the person who he is today. For him, it’s almost like he hates losing more than he loves winning.
‘That’s what spurs him on. It’s obviously helped him in his career to have the success that he’s had.’
