Britney Spears will make her first court appearance over her conservatorship on Wednesday June 23.
It’s been an exhaustive journey for the Gimme More singer who was first placed under the conservatorship in 2008 at the height of her mental health struggles.
A court put her father, Jamie Spears, in control of her personal affairs and finances indefinitely, but he now manages her money alongside a bank.
Britney, 39, is reportedly fighting to be freed from the conservatorship in order to finally take care of her own wellbeing. It has emerged that Britney wanted to have her father removed as a conservator as far back as 2016.
Scrutiny of Britney’s conservatorship mounted earlier this year following release of the documentary, Framing Britney Spears, breathing new life into the #FreeBritney movement.
Her appearance in court tomorrow will be a landmark moment in the ongoing legal issue.
Will Britney Spears speak in court?
Britney will appear at the court hearing remotely on June 23 at 1.30pm PST.
Her lawyer, Samuel D Ingham III, said she wanted to address the court directly and filed a request which was granted by Judge Brenda Penny at the Los Angeles County Court.
Ingham said at the time: ‘The conservatee has requested that I seek from the court a status hearing at which she can address the court directly.
‘My client asked that it be done on expedited basis.’
It’s known what Britney will discuss specifically but another hearing regarding the estate’s accounting documents is set for July 14.
What is a conservatorship?
A conservatorship is a legal concept of guardianship in America where representatives are appointed following a court ruling that an individual is not capable of making their own decisions.
Usually, it is a course of action reserved for people who are older, vulnerable or suffering from serious mental health issues such as schizophrenia or dementia.
With regards to Britney, her financial and medical affairs are handled by her father and a legal representative.
Does Britney have any control over her life?
The legal constraints of her conservatorship may suggest that Britney has little control over her life, a lawyer for the singer insisted last year that this was not the case, saying: ‘She’s always involved in every career and business decision. Period.’
Britney herself appeared to confirm this by telling fans on social media: ‘You may not know this about me but I am strong, and stand up for what I want!’
