Sex Education series 3 is set to take viewers by surprise as one writer teased a ‘pivotal moment’ is on the horizon.
The next chapter of the beloved Netflix drama is finally expected to arrive later this year, with fans having waited patiently since January 2020 to get answers to the many cliffhangers.
While it’s been teased that the new scenes will lead up to a ‘massive’ ending, storylines have so-far remained firmly under wraps.
Luckily writer Mawaan Rizwan, who is hosting YouTube Originals’ virtual Pride Party alongside It’s A Sin’s Olly Alexander, was able to give us a taster of what’s in store.
‘There’s a lot of unexpected twists and turns and in my episode, I write on episode five, something really pivotal happens,’ he exclusively told Metro.co.uk.
‘Something that might make you gasp.’
Mawaan added that he’s looking forward to Eric, Maeve and Lily’s storylines in particular.
‘I really relate to her,’ he said of Lily. ‘She’s the weirdo and we all had elements like that outsiderness at high school.’
Talking about how the writers come up with the storylines, Mawaan said nothing is off limits.
‘All of our personal stories go into the show and that’s what I like because it’s a really diverse writers’ room and it means that it’s not a homogeneous story,’ he explained. ‘It’s stories with nuance and complexities and contradictions.
‘I’m really proud to be part of a show that is so open and honest and frank. A show that offsets a culture that is full of shame around sex especially when it comes to sexualities and different identities.
‘If I saw this show growing up it would have helped me so much because you can’t be what you can’t see and you see some of these characters work through these icky problems and insecurities and have those bodies, those experiences normalised.
‘I think a show like this is more important than ever.’
Mawaan will be celebrating Pride virtually on June 25 with Olly and a whole host of friends the LGBTQ+ community.
The event also includes a special guest appearance from activist Munroe Bergdorf and Lady Phyll as well as big performances from the likes of MNEK, Mabel, and RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Bimini Bon-Boulash.
YouTube Pride 2021 will kick off on Years & Years’ channel at 8pm on Friday 25th June 2021. Visit YouTube Originals for where to view the rest of the night’s entertainment.
Sex Education seasons one and two are available to stream on Netflix.
