Frank Lampard has praised Billy Gilmour for his performance in Scotland’s goalless draw with England at Euro 2020 on Friday evening.

The Chelsea midfielder was handed his first senior start for Scotland and delivered a man-of-the-match display at Wembley to help earn his side a draw in Group D.

Lampard handed Gilmour his first-team debut at Chelsea in 2019, while the 20-year-old also had an impressive end to the season under Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.

And following his latest performance at the heart of Scotland’s midfield, Lampard paid tribute to his former player after the stalemate at Wembley.

In his response to a post praising Gilmour on Instagram, Lampard replied: ‘Top top player.’

Jose Mourinho, also hailed Gilmour for his impact against England.

‘The kid Gilmour was the difference,’ the former Chelsea manager told talkSPORT.

‘He was always showing, he wanted the ball under the pressure.’

Speaking after the match, Scotland manager Steve Clarke praised Gilmour for his performance.

‘I don’t think there is any risk when you have somebody of Billy Gilmour’s talent. When you put him on the pitch you expect him to do what he did,’ said Clarke.

‘He held the ball for us and allowed us to play through the midfield. I didn’t think it was a risk for the balance of the rest of the team.

‘We were ready to support Billy in his role and I think we did that.

‘Everyone has praised Billy but we need to look at the team performance. There are a lot of good people around and that supported Billy.

‘It was great to see him get through 70 odd minutes on his first start.

‘I have said for the last year that Billy will be a big part of the future of Scotland.

‘We will try to take care of him and make sure he is a big player in the future.’
