England have managed to finish top of their group in Euro 2020 – and it has sparked celebrations across the country.
Fans packed into a sold-out fan zone in Trafalgar Square for the final march of this stage against the Czech Republic cheered at the 1-0 result.
But there was heartbreak for Scottish fans, who saw their team leave the competition.
Boris Johnson celebrated England’s success in securing a place in the last 16.
He tweeted: ‘Huge congratulations to @England on finishing top of the group and joining @Cymru in the last 16 of #Euro2020.
‘Disappointing that @ScotlandNT couldn’t get the result they needed, but Steve Clarke and his players deserve huge credit.’
Nicola Sturgeon said she was ‘proud’ of the Scotland team after they exited following a defeat by Croatia.
Steve Clarke’s side lost 3-1 at Hampden to finish bottom of Group D.
First Minister Sturgeon tweeted: ‘Not to be, but thank you @ScotlandNT for taking us to our first men’s tournament in 23 years – you’ve played your hearts out and we’ve been proud to cheer you on.’
In London, two big screens displayed the England game on either side of Nelson’s Column.
Fans cheered vehemently when Raheem Sterling scored the opening goal after 12 minutes, but some didn’t actually want the Three Lions to win the match, due to strategy going forward.
Emma Birkett, who is a key worker, said she did not want England to top the group to avoid a potential clash with France, Portugal or Germany in Group F.
She said: ‘There is something great about being an underdog because we are always almost there.
‘It would almost be better not to win this one because we don’t really want to go head to head with the “group of death”.’
The atmosphere among supporters quietened in the second half, although scattered cries of ‘go on Harry’, ‘legend’ and ‘England’ were yelled from tables around Trafalgar Square.
Supporters were divided on how far England would make it through the tournament.
Akash Bhagawati said: ‘We’ll get further in the tournament but I don’t think we’ll win (it). We’d definitely like for England to win and we’ll be supporting them but I don’t see it happening.’
But Kieran Bennett added: ‘We’ve had a goal, and I think we’re going to get another one. It’s been great. It’s coming home.’
