The Panesar family in EastEnders have been ripped apart following the news that Suki Panesar’s (Balvinder Sopal) son Jags has died in prison.
Following Suki’s return to Walford, it didn’t take long until viewers discovered her mysterious behaviour was down to trying to find enough money to save Jags, who was in trouble with some men behind bars at the time.
Despite the family doing all that they could, it wasn’t enough, and in Thursday’s (June 24) edition of the BBC One soap, Kheerat (Jaz Deol) returned home to discover the news that his brother had died.
EastEnders fans are aware that Jags was wrongly imprisoned by Suki. Last year, Vinny (Shiv Jalota) attempted to commit a robbery which resulted in him attacking Martin (James Bye).
As Suki’s anger grew after discovering Jags was in a relationship with Habiba (Rukku Nahar), she got her revenge and had him arrested for the attack on Martin.
With the Panesar family dealing with the loss of one of their own, Shiv Jalota has been speaking about his character Vinny’s reaction:
‘Vinny feels completely responsible’, he explained.
‘I don’t think he’s ever lost someone, so this is the first time he’s experienced loss and the fact that it’s his brother and the fact he is the reason why Jags is in prison, he feels guilt and numbness.
Everyone in the family is on their own journeys with grief, and what their involvement was with sending Jags to prison.’
Shiv continued, revealing what the future will hold for Vinny as his emotions begin to overwhelm him:
‘He’s changed as a person. Vinny is trying remould himself. Vinny is trying to remake himself into someone that he is not.
He tries to reinvent his image as a coping mechanism. That’s self-combustion and it’s so heart-breaking to play.’
