Friends cast members Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox are best known for portraying married couple Chandler Bing and Monica Geller, but according to new research, they’re also real-life distant cousins.
Following the release of the long-awaited reunion on HBO Max, Genealogy website MyHeritage has discovered the co-stars are 11th cousins and share family members William Osbern Haskell III and Ellen Haskell.
William and Ellen were married and lived in England around 500 years ago, and she emigrated to the US in 1635 with her two sons, Roger and William.
Experts are claiming that William is a direct ancestor of Matthew, 51, and Roger is said to be a direct ancestor of 56-year-old Courteney.
The research also found the Friends stars are said to be loosely related to Lady Gaga.
Roi Mandel, the head of research at MyHeritage, told CNN: ‘We went into this line very deeply, we checked every name.
‘We found a lot of records that support it, and we have confidence that they are related. This is not such a surprise. It makes sense that when you go so many generations back, the chances of people being connected are higher.’
Chandler and Monica married in Friends’ seventh series, and the couple became parents in the last-ever episode.
The cast of the sitcom – which also includes Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer – recently reunited to film a one-off special titled Friends: The Reunion, in which they will reflected on their memories of the show.
In the one-off episode, Matthew spoke about how he would seek validation in getting laughs from the show’s audience.
‘I felt like I was going to die if they didn’t laugh,’ he said. ‘And it’s not healthy, for sure.
‘But I would sometimes say a line and they wouldn’t laugh and I would sweat, and go into convulsions. If I didn’t get the laugh I was supposed to get, I would freak out. I felt like that every single night.’
Friends: The Reunion is available to stream on NOW from May 27 and will air on Sky One at 8pm.
