Kate Garraway has shared that her husband Derek Draper isn’t out of the woods yet as he continues to recover from coronavirus.
After it was revealed in Tuesday’s ITV documentary Finding Derek that the former political advisor could be in hospital until December, Kate shed light on her partner’s current state to Good Morning Britain viewers.
‘Once the documentary goes out in parts, the situation doesn’t change does it, so the battle for Derek goes on and he’s got a challenging week this week and next,’ she told audiences.
‘Yesterday I was feeling [overwhelmed] and that’s what I think we’re all feeling, aren’t we? We’re all feeling like the battle goes on.’
Derek was hospitalised in March 2020 with Covid-19 and has been getting treatment ever since.
He is now free of the virus, but is still dealing with the long-term effects it has had on his body including kidney failure and liver damage.
Colleague Susanna Reid praised Kate for opening up and sharing her story, branding her a ‘miracle worker’.
‘We’ve just got to hang onto hope and keep going forward haven’t we?’ Kate said.
The hour-long special followed Kate, 53, and the couple’s two children, daughter Darcey, 15, and 11-year-old son Billy, throughout his ongoing illness.
Derek, also 53, remains in hospital after being admitted with coronavirus symptoms in March last year.
Talking about the reaction, Kate revealed: ‘It’s been absolutely overwhelming in a really wonderful way. So many comments from people.’
Piers Morgan and Ben Shephard led the tributes for Kate foollowing the documentary, with the former Good Morning Britain presenter tweeting: ‘This is heart-breaking.’
He also wrote ‘Love you [Kate],’ before adding a quote from Nelson Mandela, which read: ‘It always seems impossible until it’s done.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
