It’s doubtful that Emmerdale’s Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) would ever make the shortlist for any Mother of the Year awards, but she’s about to plummet further in people’s estimation when she slaps son Noah (Jack Downham).
In the run-up to the bust-up, a worried Noah will be seen fretting that he’s about to fail his upcoming army medical after a run with Charity leaves him doubled up in pain.
As regular viewers know, Noah suffered possible kidney damage in late 2019 following a drugs overdose. But when Charity reminds him of his vulnerabilities, Noah is annoyed with his mum but also concerned about the impact this weakness will have on his future plans.
In an effort to safeguard his career in the armed forces, Noah decides to indulge in a spot of subterfuge and convinces Samson (Sam Hall) to provide a urine sample that he can then pass off as his own.
But Samson will have second thoughts about his actions and opts to confess to Charity, who ends up calling the assessment centre. When Noah eventually realises that his mum has interfered, he lays into her for what he perceives to be selfishness and says that his life would have turned out better had Charity sold him forever.
It’s this reference to Noah’s bumpy start in life that goads Charity into lashing out. But in striking Noah, she soon realises that she’s gone too far and once again seeks solace in alcohol.
At a low ebb and full of self-loathing, Charity then comes onto the radar of Al (Michael Wildman) who, in the wake of being humiliated by Debbie (Charley Webb) and Priya (Fiona Wade), is plotting revenge.
As Al manoeuvres Charity into revealing all about Debbie’s intentions, the conversation soon leads to the bedroom. But with Al determined to make Debbie pay, will Charity find herself a casualty of his scheming? Is she about to hit rock bottom?
And will her relationship with Noah be left permanently wrecked in the process?
