Vicar Charles Anderson (Kevin Mathurin) and his son Ethan (Emile John) are the latest arrivals in Emmerdale.
So far Charles has made quite the impact on Harriet Finch (Katherine Dow Blyton) as she continues to struggle following Malone’s (Mark Womack) death, and Ethan has already found himself unintentionally caught up in some village drama after Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) planted drugs in his coat so he would get arrested instead of her.
Playing an on-screen father and son duo requires great chemistry between actors Kevin and Emile, and off-screen, Kevin revealed how well he clicked with Emile, and how sharing a family surname may mean they’re actually related in real life!
‘I’d been confirmed for the part a month before then came to do the screen test, doing the same scene multiple times, willing them all to do well. Emile was one of the strongest lot, it didn’t surprise me he got it. It clicked and there was a vibe. He did an amazing job – I was nervous for them. I was so pleased, I got in touch and we connected. We might actually be distantly related.’
Emile added: ‘We’re both from the island of St Lucia. Kevin’s surname is rare on the island and my grandma shares it – there might be a connection.’
Kevin laughed: ‘They’re from the same village as well!’
It’s not just the possibility of a distant connection between Kevin and Emile, as Emile explained the chemistry between them was there, even during the first time they met:
‘Kevin and I met on the screen test, it’s funny but once we were there on set it felt we already had this bond and chemistry. The scene caught fire immediately.
If I don’t remember what’s happened, it usually means I have done it well. We’re both from South London, identify with the same values. It’s a pleasure.’
