The Wednesday Inbox is very excited about The Mandalorian’s video game enemies, as one reader offers a free Christmas gift.

New policy
I’m not sure where the idea that Cyberpunk 2077 has had rave reviews has come from. The Metacritic is 91, which is good but not amazing, and many of the most sensible sites have not yet posted their reviews, including GC, Eurogamer, Kotaku, and Giant Bomb. GameSpot only gave it 7/10, Polygon were very off about it, and IGN only gave it 90% – which is 50% on anyone else’s scale.
I’m not saying it’s good or bad, because obviously I haven’t played it yet, but I’m very happy for my decision to wait for the dedicated PlayStation 5 version and all the bug fixing and proper reviews that come with it. All the controversy over bugs and epilepsy and how the game treats minorities is not encouraging to me either and I want to see how that pans out as well.
Console review copies only being sent out at the last minute screams performance issues too, so again I’m very happy to be sitting this one out for a few months. It’s beginning to feel like buying any big scale game at launch is just a waste of time and money and I can see this becoming my new policy from now on.
Crisscross
Exclusive announcement
Very glad to know that Gran Turismo 7 is going to be PlayStation 5 only, although as GC implied the chances of it not having at least three major delays are practically zero, coronavirus or not. I still don’t understand why Sony is making so many cross-gen games, or rather why they suddenly changed their minds about it.
Spider-Man and Sackboy I get, fine, but why Horizon Forbidden West if it’s going to be, presumably, next year’s big Christmas game? And I’m going to guess God Of War 2 will be cross-gen too, just because the first one was PlayStation 4-only.
As others have said, it all seemed to be knee jerk reaction but I can’t work out to what? Microsoft didn’t change policies or see some sudden increase in support for Halo Infinite being cross-gen (the opposite really) so what was it all about?
Was it not a sudden decision and Sony just thought it best to lie about it for a while? But if that was the case why brag about all their exclusives and then just weeks later throw egg on their own face? It’s almost Nintendo levels of incomprehensible.
Brawndo
Price hike
I’m honestly not sure what Sony and Microsoft could do to deter scalpers. Even if Sony had notified everyone in advance (which would have been nice), it’s hard to see that reducing the number of consoles the scalpers might grab.
The scalpers are exploiting the difference between supply and demand, so if we want the console manufacturers to do something they could sell the consoles at the price dictated by demand, i.e. a higher price.
While this would deter scalpers, and would arguably more accurately reflect what the console is worth, it would probably be an unpopular move. Still, if they are going to be criticised either way, they might as well make money out of it, right?

GC: Microsoft has already talked about creating some sort of allocation system, although so far it has been just talk.

Decision made
Thank you for everybody’s help with choices and info about a 4K TV. I have decided to go with one that was suggested in the comments by, I think, TwoMacks, thee LG OLED55CX5LB. Although it is higher than my original budget I am going to wait till January to see how much cheaper it is then, or later into next year to get it a bit cheaper. Hopefully my current TV will last till then!

PS: Seven Enhanced Edition is free for the next 48 hours on Humble Bundle, at time of writing this email. You just need to subscribe to their newsletter and you can then download the game on GOG. Here’s the link.
Christmas symbols
I’ve found the PlayStation symbols yesterday and today, but I’m confused on if you have to find them on all the days or just one day and that’s it?
If you could let me know that would be great. I really don’t want to ruin my chances of winning a PlayStation 5 as it’s the only thing my son’s asked for! Give a momma a chance please!
Lisa
GC: As we understood it you had to click on the symbols and that took you to a page you could fill in your contact details. They were only up for a couple of hours a day though, so you may have missed your chance if you didn’t do it at the time.
From game to screen
I don’t want to spoil the latest episode for anyone (although I will spoil that it rocks!) but The Mandalorian is making some deep cuts into Star Wars lore, bringing back a major enemy from old LucasArts games. I though it’d be just a kind of similar idea, when they hinted about it before, but they called it the same thing and although the back story is different it’s basically the same idea. Awesome!
There’s been a lot of references to things that only appeared in the games, especially the Knights Of The Old Republic series. The main location of the latest episodes was from The Old Republic and I loved that.
It makes me wonder what else they’ll put in next. If they add some of the ships from X-Wing and TIE Fighter or add Kyle Katarn to the mix I don’t think my nerd brain can take it.
EA has got to do a Mando game now, it just seems so obvious. I mean the whole thing is already structured like a video game anyway, with Mando going off on side quests and levelling up with new equipment. If there’s an announcement at The Game Awards I’ll put in my pre-order then and there!
Jodo Kast
PS: I just remembered they mentioned Teräs Käsi in the Solo movie too!
A nite to remember
Not much of a fan of the game but you have to admire the showmanship of the Fortnite events.
The looming sense of trepidation and sheer menacing scale of Galactus in the last season was epically portrayed!
Quite frankly the Marvel content is interlaced with the Fortnite universe so well it puts to shame that prosaic official Avengers game.

Pay it forward
I’ve decided there’s only one way to defeat the douchebag scalpers and delivery driver thieves intent on ruining Christmas – with love!
I’ve just finished my copy of Ready Player Two. If you enjoyed Ready Player One, you’ll enjoy the sequel just as much, if not more. If GC are happy to be the middleman, I’m happy to post my copy on to another reader (I’ll pay for postage).
I’d like it to go to someone who has read the original and was unable to get either of the new consoles despite trying, particularly if it was for their kids to open on Christmas Day. Hopefully this will help ease the pain!
If no such person exists, then I’m happy for it to go to anyone who has read and enjoyed the original (and isn’t a scalper or a thief, obvs).
It’s a completely unspoiled hardback, read once.
Are you happy to do the honours GC? Appreciate that this isn’t strictly gaming related but it’s pretty close!
Julian
GC: That’s very nice of you. If someone writes in wanting it we’re happy to forward you on their details. They’ll have to send in a useable Inbox letter to be considered though, as per the usual giveaway rules.
Inbox also-rans
A lot of the other reviews of Cyberpunk 2077 mention that there are frequent bugs in the game, have you experienced much of this? I think I’ll skip the PlayStation 4 and make this my inaugural PlayStation 5 game.
ANON
GC: The PlayStation 4 version was sent much later than the PC one, after a day zero patch was released. We’ll have a full review later.
For the reader lamenting several days ago RE: stock shortages for a PlayStation 4 joystick to use with Star Wars: Squadrons, Argos have the Thrustmaster T Flight Hotas 4 (I’m assuming that’s what they were referring to) back in stock. At least stock local to me anyway, so hopefully that’ll be the same nationwide.
Meestah Bull
GC: It seems to be in stock for us too, here’s the link.
This week’s Hot Topic
The topic for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Grackle, who asks who is your favourite video game protagonist?
Regardless of the quality of the games they’re in, which hero (or anti-hero) do you enjoy playing as the most and why? How much does their visual design and gameplay abilities play into it, compared to their personality and storyline?
How important is it that you like the hero in a video game and have you ever bought one – or avoided one – based purely on the main character? Do games in which there is no pre-made character appeal to you less or does it depend on the game?
