Christmas markets are undoubtedly one of the best parts of the festive season – but due to Covid-19 restrictions many will be cancelled this year.

The elderly residents living at Foxholes Care Home, in Hitchin, North Hertfordshire, were some of many who were disappointed that they wouldn’t be able to visit their local markets this month.

But in a bid to keep the festive spirit alive, care home staff came up with a heartwarming plan to make sure their residents didn’t miss out – they brought the market to them.

Residents were ‘delighted’ when they were welcomed into the Christmas fair held inside the residence, complete with stalls offering sweet treats and handmade gifts.

Hannah Granger, a staff member at Foxholes Care Home, said: ‘Our residents love the festivities that come with experiencing Christmas markets and we wanted to ensure they didn’t feel left out this year due to the current restrictions.’

The care home managed to make everything Covid-secure by asking local vendors to set up their stalls at the home while the residents were isolating.

They then left before the residents entered the market, meaning they could browse safely.

Each stall holder also donated an item from their stand to a Christmas raffle which will raise money for an accessible minibus.

Ms Granger said: ‘Hosting a market indoors took a lot of planning and effort but the local businesses we reached out to were only too happy to help out.

‘We pulled it off and the residents were delighted.

‘While we understand things aren’t normal this year, we continue to try our best to keep our residents connected with the community, of which they are an integral part.’
