The Great British Bake Off’s Dave Friday has admitted he was relieved that furlough meant he was able to take part on the show.

The 30-year-old Armed Guard was put on leave back in April, and made the most of his newfound spare time by spending all his time baking.

As a result, his time on the show has seen him become a favourite to win – and now he faces Hermine, Peter and Laura in the semi-finals.

Speaking to Radio Times about his rigorous practice schedule, he said: ‘I practised most days – thank goodness I was on furlough!

‘There were so many different baking styles, techniques and jargon I hadn’t heard of, so I felt I needed to start from scratch.

‘It was such a learning curve, but I really enjoyed that part of the journey – little did I know how long the journey would last!’

‘Our neighbours, friends and family got to try my practice bakes, but most of them didn’t know why I was doing them,’ he laughed.

‘They just thought I was being inventive with what I’d decided to make.’

Dave has had a lot to celebrate lately, even beyond the show – and has become a dad for the first time.

Dave has won star barker once in this year’s series, and left a lasting impression with his icon, Blink 182’s Tom DeLonge, by baking a bust of his face in the first ever showstopper challenge.

With just two weeks to go, will he be able to make it to the end?
