Should I sell my PS4 games collection to buy a PS5? – Reader’s Feature

Time to clear out a generation’s worth of collector’s editions? (pic: Sony)

A reader lists the scariest moment he’s ever encountered in video games, from Zelda: Breath Of The Wild to Resident Evil 7.

I have been a gamer for around 23 years and have owned a PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, jumped ship to Xbox for the 360 (in no small part due to the PlayStation 3 price) and currently own a PlayStation 4 and have a PlayStation 5 disc version pre-ordered. I own the odd digital game, as I have PlayStation Plus and sometimes there are deals too good to miss.

I will buy a disc version of consoles as long as the make them, as I am a gaming collector as well as a gamer and enjoy purchasing special editions of games I enjoy or at least hope to. When a game that interests me is coming up, you can find me googling what editions will be available.

As the PlayStation 5 release day rapidly approaches, I’m faced with the decision of keeping or selling my PlayStation 4 discs and associated memorabilia. The PlayStation 5, as we know, is backwards compatible with 99% of games and there are some that will be worth a run through again but there are some that I am unlikely to play again, but are aesthetically pleasing.

For example, I have numerous collector’s editions including The Last Of Us Part 2, Days Gone, Uncharted 4, Far Cry 4 and 5, Mirror’s Edge, Just Cause 3, Hitman 1 and 2 (how could I not buy a version with a briefcase?!) and many more. I also have special editions of games such as Spider-Man, God Of War, and Death Stranding after being unable to find the larger collector’s editions or simply priced out of them. I’m lucky to have a very understanding partner and space to store them but when I sell my PlayStation 4, should these editions go as well?

They will be compatible with the new console but if I am unlikely to ever put the disc into the console, should I bid farewell to them at the same time as the old console or keep them on my shelves in the hope they one day increase in value? I’m also running out of space and will no doubt find PlayStation 5 random editions of games I will want.

My main worry is that in years to come my PlayStation 4 games will end up in a cupboard like my PlayStation 2 games. Great memories but largely worthless and it begrudges me to throw them in a skip or drop them off at the local charity shop to be sold at 50p a game.

I am left thinking I could trade them in at GAME (for a pittance), begin the arduous task of selling them online individually or I could keep them for who knows how long to eventually sell. They do bring me joy but there can be a fine line between rare and obsolete. I’m sure there are editions, such as my Resident Evil 7 Collector’s Edition with the Baker mansion, that will hold value but some, such as the Ubisoft editions where much higher numbers are produced, won’t.

What do you guys think, is it time to say goodbye to all things PlayStation 4 once the new era is ushered in or cling onto the collectibles that hold many positive gaming memories? Also, have you ever sold anything you later either bought back or wished you had never sold in the first place?
