Phillip Schofield has shared his thoughts on how his late father would have reacted to him coming out as gay, hoping he would still be proud of him.
The This Morning host came out as gay in February, speaking out about his sexuality on the show with Holly Willoughby.
While Phillip, 58, came out to his mother, he never got the chance to tell his late father about his sexuality as his dad died in 2008.
Speaking on Chris Evans’ How To Wow podcast, he admitted the thought of how his dad would have reacted played on his mind.
He explained: ‘That’s like a grenade going off in my head. When I went down to Cornwall when I told my mum, I said, “What do you think dad would have said? Would he still be proud?”
‘Thankfully she said, “Yes… he’ll think you’re brave and he will always be proud of you.” So that is good… My dad was one of the kindest, sweetest, most lovely people ever.’
Phillip also revealed his mother’s hilarious reaction when he broke the news, as she exclaimed: ‘Oh thank god! I thought you were going blind!’
Her worries about his eyesight came because he suffers from ‘floaters’ in his eyes and she was scared he was about to break the news he was losing his sight.
Phillip also recently told Chris on his Virgin Radio breakfast show that he wasn’t aware that him coming out publicly would help other people as well.
He explained: ‘It was only after that I realised. Because my head probably got very, very selfish. I thought a lot about me.
‘I got lost very much in the darkness of my own head, so I didn’t think about the wider consequences. I was concerned for my family, I was concerned for the job. How will people see me? Are they going to look at me differently?
‘Actually last night someone messaged me. They said, “you saved my life and you made it okay.”‘
