Mesut Ozil leapt to the defence of Arsenal team-mate Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after his goal celebration was branded ‘silly’ by Real Madrid ace Toni Kroos.
Kroos was heavily critical of players who celebrate with masks. The Germany international described their use in matches as ‘nonsense’.
‘If there are rehearsed dances or choreographies, I find it silly,’ Kroos said on his podcast ‘Einfach mal Luppen’.
‘Celebrating with masks, that’s where it ends for me. I don’t think that’s a good role model either. What nonsense.’
Aubameyang was quick to hit back at him on social media.
He tweeted: ‘By the way, does this Toni Kroos have kids? Just to remember I did it for my son few times and I will do it again.
‘I wish you have kids one day and make them happy like this Junior School pupils and don’t Forget #maskon #staysafe.’
Ozil took sides with his club team-mate over his compatriot.
Posting a video of Aubameyang celebrating in a Black Panther mask, Ozil wrote: ‘The best goal celebration.’
Aubameyang was clearly delighted to get Ozil’s support. He quote tweeted Ozil’s response and said: ‘My bro you know.’
He had earlier sent another dig to Kroos, posting a picture of him and Marco Reus as Batman and Robin and writing: ‘Send Toni Kroos congratulations for his three kids, cordially your Batman and Robin.’
Aubameyang wore the Black Panther mask, made famous by actor Chadwick Boseman who died earlier this year, after scoring in the Europa League against Rennes last season.
He said at the time: ‘I needed a mask which could represent me. It’s Black Panther. In Gabon the national team are the panthers. It represents me.’
