Justin Bieber has criticised his Grammy 2021 nomination for best pop vocal album.
The singer is nominated in the category for his album Changes while single Yummy is up for best pop solo performance.
His song Intentions, featuring rapper Quavo, is also up for best pop duo/group performance.
Taking to Instagram on Tuesday after the nominations were announced, Justin said that a pop album ‘wasn’t what I set out to make’.
He expressed his love of R&B and believes Changes fits in that category.
Justin wrote: ‘Please don’t mistake this as me being ungrateful, these are just my thoughts take em or leave em. Thank you to the people who fought for me to even have any noms. (sic)’
In a screenshot of a statement, he went on: ‘To the Grammys I am flattered to be acknowledged and appreciated for my artistry.
‘I am very meticulous and intentional about my music. With that being said I set out to make an R&B album. Changes was and is an R&B album.
‘It is not being acknowledged as an R&B album which is very strange to me. I grew up admiring R&B music and wished to make a project that would embody that sound. For this not to be put into that category feels weird considering from the chords to the melodies to the vocal style all the way down to the hip hop drums that were chosen it is undeniably, unmistakably an R&B album!’
The Sorry singer went on: ‘To be clear I absolutely love Pop music it just wasn’t what I set out to make this time around.
‘My gratitude for feeling respected for my work remains and I am honoured to be nominated either way.’
He isn’t the only one upset about the nominations, with Nicki Minaj slating the awards on Twitter.
She said: ‘Never forget the Grammys didn’t give me my best new artist award when I had 7 songs simultaneously charting on billboard & bigger first week than any female rapper in the last decade- went on to inspire a generation. They gave it to the white man Bon Iver.’
Elsewhere Cardi B came out swinging to defend herself after she wasn’t given any nods for next year.
In an Instagram video, the rapper explained that she hadn’t submitted WAP to be considered as she is waiting to release her album.
The rapper fumed: ‘Stop playing with me. Like I said, I never pressed for a Grammy, but y’all are not gonna take away something that I know that I worked my ass off that I deserve.
‘If I was pressed for a Grammy I would have submitted WAP for this year. I didn’t submit. I didn’t want to be submitted to award shows until I put out my album because I think my album is so good, and it means something and I worked on it a lot. I’ve been working on it for almost two years.
‘Some songs are so emotional to me because I did them during quarantine. I’m not pressed or nothing, I’m not gonna keep doing this s**t constantly because y’all are upset. Y’all cannot take my success.’
Meanwhile Beyonce and Taylor Swift are leading the way in the Grammys 2021 nods, with Dua Lipa, Doja Cat, Jhene Aiko, and Megan Thee Stallion also landing multiple nominations.
