How much does the PS5 cost and can you get one before Christmas?

Sony’s next gen PlayStation 5 console launches this week in the UK but it’s not cheap and it’s not easy to get hold of either.

The PlayStation 5, Sony’s next generation video games console, is finally available in the UK. It’s already been out for a week in the rest of the world but thanks to the complications of dealing with the coronavirus pandemic Sony weren’t quite able to organise a simultaneous worldwide launch.

That’s fine though, it hasn’t been much of a wait, and at least UK fans now know exactly what to expect from the console itself and all its games.

The only problem is whether you can get hold of a PlayStation 5 if you haven’t pre-ordered one already, which is going to be an issue worldwide.

Pre-orders stopped a long time ago but more stock is expected in stores from today, although that doesn’t mean it’s going to be easy to just pick up and buy one.

How much is the PS5 in the UK?

The PlayStation 5 is £449.99 in the UK, exactly the same as the rival Xbox Series X.

There are actually two models of PlayStation 5 though, with the Digital Edition being exactly the same but lacking a disc drive to play games and movies. That knocks £90 off the price though, at £359.99.

Even though it’s Black Friday next week those prices are likely to stay the same for a long time, given the high demand and low stock, although you might get some good value bundles from some retailers, that include extra controllers and games for a higher price.

How can I buy a PS5 console in time for Christmas in the UK?

This is the big question and it’s one with no easy answers.

From today pre-orders are irrelevant as the console has officially launched everywhere but stock is still so limited that most retailers won’t have any to sell.

Amazon and GAME have said they will get stock in today but it’s likely to sell out very quickly – probably within an hour or less – and so it’ll be a case of checking websites and as many different stores as possible and hoping you get lucky.

The only other real alternatives are ordering via BT, if you’re a customer, as they’re taking orders from today, or paying over the odds on eBay.

Sellers on eBay have been charging thousands of pounds just for PlayStation 5 pre-orders and those prices aren’t likely to get any more sensible anytime soon.

The stock situation should slowly improve as the weeks and months go by, so if you don’t get a console today, or even this month, that doesn’t mean you’ve got no chance during December.

Sony hasn’t said when they expect the PlayStation 5 to be easily available but Microsoft has warned that the Xbox Series X won’t be in that position until around April next year, so you’re probably looking at something similar for the PlayStation 5.
