The Great British Bake Off stars were put to the test in a very tense quarter-final, as they got stuck into dessert week.

It was a bittersweet Bake Off instalment as Marc Elliott was sent home from the Channel 4 show, after failing to impress with his showstopper.

Despite nearly being eliminated last week, Laura had a better time in the tent, and was narrowly beaten to the star baker crown by Hermine.

However, viewers were left unhappy over some of the decisions made in the run up to the semi-final.

With some particularly furious at Prue Leith’s very tricky technical…

So, if you happened to skip last night’s episode, here’s what you missed on the Bake Off quarter final.

Marc leaves tent

Marc was eliminated from the tent at the end of a tense episode.

He struggled the most with the showstopper – with Paul Hollywood comparing the base of his jelly cake to concrete – and was eventually sent home.

Speaking about his exit, just before the semi-final, Marc insisted he was feeling ‘surprisingly okay’ about going home.

‘I am so pleased to have made it to the quarter final,’ he said. ‘I didn’t expect at all to get this far, so I feel it has been a great experience and I am so happy that my two daughters got to share it with me.

‘I came to the Bake Off to kind of face my anxieties, to face failure and to face all those things that people can be quite uncomfortable about dealing with.

‘I have definitely learned a lot more about myself and, from what people have said, to give myself a bit more credit, which I don’t!’

Who was named star baker?

It was a better few days in the tent for Hermine, who was named as star baker for the second week in a row – after impressing the judges with her incredible jelly cake.

She told the camera: ‘I can’t believe it!

‘I’m still seeing myself in the tent, nervous about whether that jelly will set or not,’ she laughed.

‘And I can’t believe they liked that flower!’

Laura wins ‘impossible’ technical

Laura has had a few tough weeks in the tent, but came up trumps for dessert week – and was top of the group for an ‘impossible’ technical.

The amateur bakers were tasked with creating two Sussex pond puddings, and were given two-and-a-half hours to do so.

They all struggled under the pressure, with many serving up raw pastry to the judges.

David was named the worst of the round, while Marc found himself second, and Laura won the challenge – despite Prue’s insistence that hers was ‘barely better’ than anyone else’s attempt.

Viewers were left baffled by the task, with some stating that the challenge was ‘impossible’ – as no one was given enough time.

Flocking to Twitter, a follower moaned: ‘Little bit behind on #GBBO but surely if they are all raw, they weren’t given enough time to actually steam it!!??’

‘Is it right that I’m still annoyed that I don’t think they were given long enough to steam their technical puddings…? Grr #GBBO,’ another fumed.

‘Why set a task that is impossible. Omg. #GBBO’, a fan agreed.

Prue’s age leaves viewers shocked

If the technical wasn’t enough to whip viewers into a frenzy, many were also left shocked as Prue let slip about her age.

Discussing her love of a Sussex pond pudding – a traditional 17th century dessert – with Matt Lucas and Noel Fieldding, the judge subtly dropped in conversation that she is 80-years-old.

No one watching on at home could believe their ears over the bombshell – which came just days after the realisation that Noel is nearly 50-years-old.

Commenting on how good Prue looks for her age, one viewer joked on Twitter: ‘Prue is 80?! She looks amazing! Proof that cakes and bakes are good for you #GBBO #bakeoff.’

Someone get us a Sussex pond pudding ASAP.

Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesdays, at 8pm, on Channel 4.
