Donald Trump has won the state of Kentucky as the first results from the US presidential election are announced.

The Republican candidate has held on the state he won in 2016, bagging himself eight electoral college votes.

Within minutes of the polls closing in the southern state, the Associated Press declared it for the president.

Kentucky is the home state of vice president Mike Pence and traditionally backs the Republican candidate.

The state hasn’t been won by a Democratic candidate since Bill Clinton during his first presidential race and his re-election campaign in 1996.

Mr Trump won the state by a huge margin of 29.8 points four years ago, in what was one of his strongest performances.
