Frank Warren has revealed that Daniel Dubois complained about nerve damage to his eye after his loss to Joe Joyce.
Dubois’ left eye had completely closed by the 10th round when he was caught by a left jab from Joyce. After a few seconds, Dubois winced and touched his eye before taking a knee for the full 10 count.
The defeat is the first of Dubois’ short career, with the 23-year-old winning all but one of his previous 15 fights by knockout.
‘The eye was obviously a massive problem, you’ve just seen it, he couldn’t see out of it, it was what it was,’ Warren, who had spoken to Dubois after the fight, told BT Sport.
‘I said at the beginning of the fight, it’s the battle of the jabs, whoever gets the jab they would control the fight.
‘I thought he was brilliant in the fight, there was nothing in it, but at the end of the day he couldn’t see out of the eye and Joe did what he had to do.
‘He [Dubois] said he felt the nerve, it [the pain] shot through him, and that was what it was.’
Speaking after the fight, Dubois said: ‘He caught me with a job jab, his jab was accurate, I couldn’t see out of the eye. It just happens, man. I can’t explain it.
‘He just pinged it and I couldn’t see out of it, I was trying my best, it happens.’
Meanwhile, Joyce has taken a step closer to a world heavyweight title shot with the 12th victory of his professional career.
The 35-year-old, who won a silver medal at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, said after the fight that he wants Oleksandr Usyk as his next opponent.
