Coronation Street fans hoping to see an imminent return for Paula Martin (Stirling Gallacher) are set to be disappointed as news reaches Yasmeen Nazir (Shelley King) that her lawyer has been signed off work.
It had initially been planned before the first lockdown that Yasmeen’s trial would air a lot earlier in the year, meaning that Stirling’s role in Casualty wouldn’t prove to be a filming clash but it is understood that she was unable to return to Weatherfield at this time.
That said, the door remains open for the character to make a return to the show in the future – after all, she has unfinished business with Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent), who will eventually return after the star’s maternity leave.
As for Yasmeen, she refuses to delay the trial even longer and just wants the ordeal over with so she opts to have Imran Habeeb (Charlie de Melo) represent her in court.
And he gets off to a flying start as he forces Geoff Metcalfe (Ian Bartholomew) to admit that his first wife may not be dead – and may actually be Tim’s mother as well as showing the jury the recorded footage of one of his verbal assaults of Yasmeen.
When Yasmeen then takes the stand, she reveals that she has been the victim of abuse at her husband’s hands and Imran is able to paint Geoff as the monster that he is.
However, the prosecution have some dirty tricks of their own and as Geoff brands Yasmeen a violent drunk, the barrister tries to tear apart Yasmeen’s side of things.
Can Imran keep up the fight in the closing speeches to ensure that Yasmeen gets justice?
