Alan Rickman’s 27 diaries are set to be published as a book.

The Harry Potter actor, who died aged 69 in 2016, began writing his diaries by hand in the early 1990s, always with the intention that they would one day be published.

Now, his dream is coming true, as 27 volumes of his ‘witty, gossipy and utterly candid’ inner thoughts will be published as one book, The Diaries Of Alan Rickman.

Publishing house Canongate has acquired the rights to the diaries, with Scottish Review of Books editor Alan Taylor set to edit the book.

Rickman’s widow Rima Horton said she was ‘delighted’ by the news, saying: ‘The diaries reveal not just Alan Rickman the actor, but the real Alan – his sense of humour, his sharp observation, his craftsmanship and his devotion to the arts.’

Speaking to the Guardian, Taylor said that the diaries ‘make compulsive reading and offer a peerless insight into the daily life of a remarkable actor who was as beloved in the US as he surely was in the UK’.

According to Canongate, Rickman’s diaries ‘reveal the real Alan Rickman, funny, passionate, occasionally provocative, and give fresh insight into his art. He wrote his diaries as if chatting with a close friend.

‘They provide pitch-perfect vignettes: short, pithy paragraphs painting big pictures, and offering intriguing insights into himself, his peers and the world around him. They are intimate, perceptive and very funny.’

By the time the actor had started writing his diaries, he was already a Hollywood star, following his iconic turn as Hans Gruber in 1988’s Die Hard, and his role as the Sheriff of Nottingham in 1991’s Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.

He went on to star in films including Michael Collins, Dogma and Love Actually, and famously played Severus Snape in all eight Harry Potter films.

The London-born star was also an acclaimed theatre actor, being nominated for two Tony Awards and taking leading roles in productions of Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Hamlet.

Rickman wrote about everything in his diaries, from ‘scathing’ theatre reviews to his time on the Harry Potter set, to his politics, having referred to himself as ‘being born a card-carrying member of the Labour Party’.

He continued writing them up until his death in January 2016, after being diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer.

The Diaries of Alan Rickman are set for publication in 2022.
