Finn Balor retained the NXT Championship in a brutal main event at TakeOver 31, but at what cost?
The Prince triumphed in a hard fought match against the Undisputed Era’s Kyle O’Reilly, with both WWE superstars looking legitimately banged up by the time the epic battle came to an end.
Speaking to media including Metro.co.uk less than an hour after the show, NXT boss Triple H provided health updates on both men.
He said: ‘From an injury standpoint, Kyle [is] being evaluated as we speak, and Finn Balor [is] on his way to have his jaw x-rayed to see what’s going on there.
‘Hopefully, we’re in good shape. Other than that, everybody is good.’
The two wrestlers headlined an epic NXT TakeOver event, which was the black and gold brand’s first show from its epic new home as live fans were back in attendance at the Capitol Wrestling Center.
After Slipknot frontman and wrestling mega fan Corey Taylor gave his predictions on the pre-show, the night kicked off in style with Damien Priest successfully defending his North American Championship against Johnny Gargano.
It was a coming out moment for the Archer of Infamy, who showed he belongs with the brand’s top stars after consistently delivering on TakeOver events this year.
After a long wait, KUSHIDA made his debut on the brand’s flagship show and defeated Velveteen Dream, before launching a post-match attack on his opponent.
The Cruiserweight Title was spotlighted in the middle of the show, as the champion Santons Escobar beat Isaiah “Swerve” Scott in a damn fine bout showing exactly what the stars in that division are capable of.
The NXT Women’s Championship scene heated up in a major way, with Io Shirai defending the gold against Candice LeRae as both superstars put on a phenomenal showing, as expected.
Former NXT UK Champ Toni Storm made a surprise appearance on the titan tron as she called out Shirai following her victory, but Ember Moon stole her thunder slightly as she was revealed as the former champion making a triumphant return.
And finally, even with Balor and O’Reilly’s war in the main event, Ridge Holland made a scene in the closing moments as he carried out the limp body of Undisputed Era’s Adam Cole, which acted as the perfect cliffhanger.
