If you’re the kind of emo who’s always dreamed of living in a cemetery, this property might be the one for you.

Although we have to warn you: the house is a lot more modern than the gothic castle you might have imagined.

The home we’re talking about is Gatehouse Lodge, which sits on top of an arched gateway that used to be the entry to the main cemetery in the town of Louth, Lincolnshire.

It’s now a fully modernised three-bedroom house following a detailed renovation, and is up for sale for offers in the region of £350,000, marketed by Crofts Estate Agents, Louth, via OnTheMarket.

The local landmark is thought to have been built back in 1853, but had fallen into a bad state after being left unoccupied for around seven years.

Its current owners, Dany Vere and his partner Catherine Overton, moved in about a year ago, living in a caravan in the garden for 11 months while the derelict gatehouse was renovated.

Dany, 45, said: ‘It was a bit grim – there was no fence when we arrived so we were just living in a graveyard in the middle of winter.’

The project was finally completed a month or so ago, and now the incredible property is up for sale.

And yes, it’s a pretty cool place to live.

As well as a birdseye view of the adjoining cemetery, the Grade II-listed property offers gorgeous views of the Lincolnshire countryside beyond.

Inside, the home has its very own turret, which holds a spiral staircase and windows where you can peek out.

Dany, who earns his living as a landlord, said: ‘The turret has got to be my favourite feature.

‘You can climb up it and view out over Louth and at night you can see all the stars.

‘The best thing is when you chat to somebody local and tell them what you’ve been able to do with the building – you get a great reaction because nobody wants it to be derelict.

‘Everybody who comes loves it and makes positive comments. We have put it on the market because it’s booming at the moment so we thought we’d try it.’

The turret’s spiral staircase leads to all floors of the property.

On the first floor there’s a breakfast room and kitchen with a feature oriel window, allowing plenty of natural light.

Go up a level and there’s a landing area with a fixed ladder providing access through a hatch and onto the roof of the turret.

All three bedrooms are on the second floor, too.

Outside there’s a side garden, where planning has been granted for a single storey side extension, if you fancy it, then gated access beneath the building leads to the driveway, so there’s plenty of off-road parking.

Then you’ve got some lovely gardens, which adjoin the cemetery to the rear. It’s worth noting that none of the cemetery is included in the sale, but you do get to enjoy being right next door.

Vikki Bennett, spokesperson for OnTheMarket, said: ‘The views from this property are stunning and it’s got such character.

‘I love the gardens too and the vendors have done wonders with the inside of the building.

‘Whoever buys it will be taking on a piece of history that is now a cosy and really well-appointed home.’

Rachael Emmerson, sales negotiator at Crofts Estate Agents in Louth, said: ‘Everyone in Louth knows Gatehouse Lodge and it’s a privilege to be offering it for sale.

‘It’s great that the vendors have been able to make such a lovely home out of a property that was derelict when they bought it.

‘Now its best days are ahead of it as a special home for a buyer looking for something unique.’
