Sam Smith is open to dating any gender as they look for love.
The 28-year-old came out as gay when they were 10 years old, and previously had a high-profile relationship with 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn.
However, after coming out as non-binary, Sam is open to dating women, men and other non-binary people.
Speaking to The Sun, the Stay With Me singer said: ‘I’ve never really kind of played by the rule book. I love people and whoever I fall for, that’s who I fall for. I don’t know who that’s going to be.
‘Now I don’t know what gender they will be, to be quite honest, and that’s a freeing thing – to not be limited to one category of person. I just fall in love with whoever I fall in love with. I generally have never really thought about people, any human beings, in rigid terms.’
Last March, Sam came out as non-binary and confirmed they were using they/them pronouns, saying: ‘I’m not male or female, I think I flow somewhere in between. It’s all on the spectrum.’
And the singer explained that they had always felt this way, but had only recently discovered the language that made their feelings make sense.
Sam said: ‘It wasn’t a new feeling, it was just the discovery of a language and a community of people that felt the same way.
‘It’s been lovely. It’s been a process of feeling heard and seen — that there is a space that I can live in and enjoy my life in and feel completely like myself, and be treated as such. I think that’s the difference with the pronouns.’
The Oscar and Grammy winner has just released their third album Love Goes, which has undergone a few changes over the past year.
The record, containing the singles Promises with Calvin Harris, Dancing With A Stranger with Normani and I’m Ready with Demi Lovato, was initially set for release back in June, but was pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
And the pandemic also led to the album getting a name change.
The album was originally called To Die For, but Sam felt ‘really uncomfortable’ with the word ‘die’ being in the title.
They told Zoe Ball: ‘I just felt really uncomfortable with, with what’s happening and it’s so important for me to be sensitive to my fans and to people listening to my music. This has been a really sad and awful time for us, so I’ve changed the album title, I’m going to change the album cover.’
Sam will perform on the Strictly Come Dancing results show this weekend.
